.... the History Begins

Chairman of Clwb Triathlon Llanelli, Noelwyn Daniel details some of the history leading up to the foundation of the club.

Living in Pwll, Llanelli

Early 80's

I have always been a sporty kind of person with my childhood days being dominated by rugby as everyone’s was back in the mid 70’s early 80’s. I swam for the local club as a youngster in Caerphilly but I have to confess that although I enjoyed swimming I didn't enjoy the boredom of swimming length after length especially at that age so my swimming career didn’t last long. The early 80’s saw the boom in Half Marathon’s and there were no age restrictions then, so as a 13 year old I did my first half marathon in Pontypridd along with my father. I progressed quickly to the Marathon, and as a 14 year old I completed the Western Mail Marathon in Cardiff in 1981 in a time of 5hrs 10minutes. Not that great a time I admit but then a few of us in school only decided a week or so before that it might be a good idea to have a go as a ‘Challenge’.

Back Home

A move back to Llanelli in 1985 and my rugby playing career with Felinfoel began. The 10K running scene was also in full stride and a number of T-Shirts were collected along the way – boxes of them actually. Now playing rugby and doing the 10k’s was fine but there was a new sport starting to emerge in the UK and it wasn’t long before there were a few races being organised in Wales – Yes Triathlon was here and it seemed like the perfect challenge.

The Age of Triathlon

1989 saw me complete my first Triathlon in Brecon, an 800m swim followed by a 21mile bike and a 5mile run. My preparation was only just better than my Marathon preparation a few years earlier. I could just about swim 32 length’s, I could ride a bike and hey how hard could 21 miles be anyway and the run was only 5miles and I was a seasoned 10k runner ( not very fast but seasoned!!). My confidence was badly misplaced – the swim took me 19:44, Bike 1hr 27:05 and the run 56:43 to finish in 2:43:32. and in last but one place. An amazing experience, my legs couldn’t function properly after the bike and I walked the 5miles, but I got the T-Shirt and still have it safe. A few familiar names from that day include Chris Goulden, Kevin Pullen and Errol Elexis. The love affair with Triathlon had started.

Knowing the pleasure and the interest the sport has brought me I just knew that there was a place for Triathlon in Llanelli. Early in 2001, with the support of my family I founded Llanelli's first multi-sport club .... Clwb Triathlon Llanelli.

By spreading the word to those I knew had an interest in swimming cycling and running, it soon became apparent that many others were keen to be involved with this amazing sport which encapsulates the three disciplines perfectly.

The club has grown steadily from the word go with many of our members competing at high levels over the various distances including the infamous Ironman.

Our Junior section has also been highly successful. We have great potential in our up and coming stars. We always ensure that the appropriate training, encouragement and support is given to allow the youngsters the best chance possible.

We also try to spread philosophy of living a fit and active lifestyle by organising and hosting a number of sporting events in the Llanelli area including the Llanelli Triathlon and 10k races; for further information on these events please click here.

The Future

The future of our club is very bright and positive. I envisage that the club will continue to grow and will continue help people find something that will be a lifetime asset. We will ensure that we are a service to the local community and will lead the way in promoting a fit and active lifestyle.

For me 2008 will see the start of my 19th season in Triathlon and the enthusiasm is still there. I have raced every year since that 1989 debut and have had the pleasure of seeing the sport in Wales grow from what used to be a few races per year to a full vibrant racing calendar in Wales. I now have boxes of Triathlon T-Shirts and Three Ironman medals. I’ve never won a race, not even come close actually but I enjoy taking part and for as long as that remains the case I will keep going.

Whether you want to compete or not. our club offers its members the opportunity to become fit and active in a non pressurized environment. We are truly one of the most friendly sports clubs so why not come along to see what our club can do for you. For further details please contact us
